Finding a Balance

Perhaps the best way to make use of the whole tone scale is to balance it between other scales. Here is one example of that technique:

We achieve this relaxed mood by alternating between the pentatonic scale and the whole tone scale. Let's take a closer look and see what we've done:

As you can see from the score, bars 1, 3 and 5 consist of a melody and harmony built from the C pentatonic scale. Bars 2 and 4 contain a melody and harmony found in the C whole tone scale. By alternating between these two scales, each scales benefit by not being over used. This allows the music to remain fresh for longer periods of time.
