Adding Color

The whole tone scale tends to exhaust the ear quickly. Adding some instrumental color will greatly help to lesson this side effect. Listen to what our previous example sounds like with some instrumental color:

The harp has now replaced the piano - but it plays the identical part:

The violins merely double the first note of each of the harp's triplets:

The clarinets reinforce the harp's left hand:

But what is interesting here is that the clarinets do not merely copy the harp part. While the 1st clarinet plays the exact same notes as the harp, the 2nd clarinet harmonize that part a 3rd lower.

This adds a richness of sound that greatly benefits this part.
