Instrumentation (cont.)

After a few bars - which once again feature the harp, finger cymbals and marimba - we answer the alto flute melody with a regular flute in bar 6:

Although this flute has a conventional sound, the continued use of our unique scale helps to maintain the ancient sound.

In bar 7, the timeless sounding solo cello plays a short line that incorporates Ab, the last of our Phrygian scale notes yet to be heard:

In bar 8, we make deliberate use of the notes C and Db in both the alto flute and the bassoon melodies:

This helps to emphasize the ancient character of our scale.

In bar 10, the music fades out the same way it began - with the bell tree and the held violin chords. With the exception of the ethereal sounding violins playing an open 5th interval (the notes C and G), there are no held chords to establish harmony. Our harmonic key is implied through the moving lines. Occasionally, two lines will hold a note, thereby establishing a brief chord, but usually one of those notes fades or moves on, filling the piece with a light, airy feel.
