In this first bar, we also hear three other sounds that evoke an earlier time - the bell tree, the harp and the finger cymbals:

In bar 2, a marimba introduces a few more notes from our unique scale:

Any ethnic sounding marimba will do for this part.

Also in bar 2, we introduce our first ancient sounding woodwind, the bassoon:

This sustained bassoon note establishes a short drone underneath our marimba part.

In bar 3, the alto flute plays a short melody which again makes use of some of the more unique notes in our scale:
