Each beat in a simple meter can be subdivided by a "duple" series of notes (e.g., by 8th notes, 16th notes or 32nd notes). For example, in a "four-four" measure, a single beat could be a quarter note, two 8th notes, four 16th notes, or eight 32nd notes: TripletsSome times a single beat might be subdivided by a "triple" series of notes. This triple subdivision is called a "triplet." In the following example, we will hear a triplet pattern played between duple eighth note patterns: In the above example, we heard the triplet pattern on beat 3 of each bar. Each of the other beats was subdivided by pairs of 8th notes. But some times we will want our music to have a constant triplet feel. For this we will use a different kind of meter: a compound meter. |
