What is a Measure?

A measure (a/k/a "bar") is a grouping of beats. Think of each measure as a unit of music. Measures are placed one after the other to build a piece of music.

The downbeat of each measure has a natural accent or emphasis that causes it to be stressed more strongly than the following beats of that measure. This accent on the downbeat helps to distinguish each new measure from the previous measure.

Bar lines

Vertical lines, known as "bar lines," indicate the beginning and end of each measure (or "bar") throughout a musical score:

In the context of an actual piece of music, each bar line runs from the top line of the stave to the bottom line of the stave:
