Ties

We can use a tie mark ( or ) to indicate a longer note duration. A tie mark connects two notes of the same pitch so that the second note is not rearticulated.

For example, if we wanted to hold a sound for the duration of two quarter notes, we can notate that sound as one half note:

But we can also notate that same sound as a quarter note tied to another quarter note:

Both methods will instruct the player to hold the sound for the duration of two quarter notes. Notes can be tied within a measure or over the bar line from one measure into the next measure.

Tie marks don't need to be limited to just connecting two notes. For example, you might want one long note held for the duration of four bars - or even longer:

For chords, each note must be tied individually:

Note: While there might be multiple ways to notate the same rhythm, always strive to notate your music as simply and clearly as possibly, using the least amount of notation.
