RestsLet's listen again to our quarter note example from Step 3: Some times you will not want to hear such constant sound. This is where rests come in to play. A rest simply represents a duration of silence. Let's listen to that same example with rests between notes: Rest valuesThe precise duration of silence is represented by a rest value. Each rest value can be subdivided by fractions of that rest value. For example, the duration of a half rest equals the duration of two quarter rests or four eighth rests. A whole rest equals two half rests: A half rest equals two quarter rests: A quarter rest equals two eighth rests: An eighth rest equals two sixteenth rests: The following chart illustrates these relative rest values: Let's listen to a pattern of constant 8th notes: We can make that pattern more interesting by replacing some 8th notes with 8th rests: Let's hear a different pattern using 8th notes and 8th rests: |
