Unusual Instrumental Sounds

At the very beginning of this piece, we introduce a startling effect:

We create this sound by scraping the strings inside of a piano. This produces a haunting, dissonant sound. While this is a very effective technique, it should be used sparingly.

The "scraping piano strings" effect is followed by yet another strange sound - the Waterphone:

The Waterphone is basically a metal chamber with water inside. This chamber is surrounded by thin metal rods that you bow to create a strange, otherworldly sound. The Waterphone can be used for some duration because its overtones blend in with the high violins.

It should be pointed out that the combination of sounds in this piece can be used to create a single moment of music - or they can be used as the background for a haunting melody, played by yet another set of instruments.
