Introduction

We can easily express an eerie mood by the using eerie instrumental sounds and harmonies. We've filled our piece with one such harmony, performed by the violins:

The violins perform this three note chord in their highest register.

If we count C as the root of this chord, you can see that this harmony consists of the intervals of a flat 6th and a major 7th:

This chord can be used briefly for an unsettling effect, or held for a very long time to sustain an eerie atmosphere. We can also keep these exact intervals intact and move the whole chord up or down. This new chord will still sound fresh and just as eerie.
