Harmony

The tuba is often used to perform the bass note in a four note chord. The other notes of the chord are filled in by the three trombones. Although the tuba has a rounder timbre than the trombones, the four parts blend together to create one homogeneous sound.

Final Thoughts

The tuba has a surprisingly full sound. The beginning composer/orchestrator might want to use caution at first. Too often the tuba is called upon to play constantly. This not only tires the player but the listener as well. Having said that, there is no substitute for the tuba. Its full bodied sound is essential to the sonic range of the orchestra.
