Doubling Instrument

One of the most important roles of the tuba is to fortify a double bass part, either in the same octave, or an octave below. Let's first listen to the tuba as it reinforces the basses in their same octave:

You can hear how the colors of the tuba and the basses blend to make one rich bed of sound:

The tuba is just as often called upon to double the bass trombone part, one octave lower. Listen to the powerful sound this combination creates:

 Notice how the tuba provides a full, rich low end, while the bass trombone adds metallic bite.
