Bass Trombone

The main purpose of the bass trombone is to extend the range of the trombone's bass notes. Its most effective sound is in its lower register. A safe range for the bass trombone would be from Bb1, two octaves plus a Major 2nd below Middle C, up to G4, a perfect fifth above Middle C.

As you can hear, the effect of this lower range is quite powerful.

The bass trombone is not just used for loud, dramatic exclamations. As we heard elsewhere, it often provides the bottom note of a three note trombone chord.
