Usage (cont.)Staccato AttacksJust like the trumpets, the trombones can perform crisp staccato notes. Their staccato sound is often called upon to create rhythmic excitement. It does just that in this next example: Notice that the timpani and basses only play half of all the beats in this rhythmic pattern. This allows the metallic accents of the trombones to really stand out. Trombone SlideAlthough it has become a cliché, no discussion of the trombone would be complete without a mention of its ability to slide between notes. This slide technique is also known as the trombone glissando. Let's listen to that trombone slide: Although it can always deliver a laugh, this comical effect should be used sparingly. |
