The piccolo can also perform light, delicate passages as well. This is best achieved when playing in its middle range. It does just that in this next example:

As you can hear, the piccolo is just as capable of creating sensitive moments as it is of playing loud, strident parts.

As we mentioned above, the piccolo often doubles an instrument from a lower octave. Often times, the piccolo will play along - one octave higher - with the flute or violins. But other times the piccolo will play along with an instrument that is many octaves lower, such as the bassoon. This provides a somewhat quirky, almost comical effect.
