Performance TechniquesStringed, brass and woodwind instruments can all sustain a tone for long periods of time. Because percussion instruments are all struck, the resulting tone is rather limited in duration. To counterbalance this effect, percussion instruments perform rolls to prolong their sound.
This technique allows the percussion section to sustain sound along with its fellow orchestra members.
