General Information

While you could certainly compose orchestral music without using percussion instruments, why would you want to? Percussion instruments can add rhythmic precision, exotic color and dynamic strength to any music. And while you probably wouldn't want to hear percussion instruments exclusively, you would undoubtedly feel their absence if they were excluded.

Percussion Section Members

The percussion section consists of two basic kinds of instruments: those with pitch and those without pitch.

Pitched Percussion Instruments

Pitched percussion instruments would include the timpani, xylophone, glockenspiel, and tubular bells.

Other pitched instruments would include the marimba and vibraphone.
