Clefs

A Clef is a symbol appearing at the beginning of a musical staff.

The Clef determines the names of the lines and spaces in a staff. For example, a note on the second line of the staff has a different name (G) with a Treble clef...

than its name (B) with a Bass clef...

The two most commonly used clefs are the Treble clef and the Bass clef.

Several instruments use another clef, the C clef. The C clef usually serves as either an Alto clef or a Tenor clef, depending on the clef's vertical positioning on the staff.
