Harmonies Against Melodies (cont.)On beat 4 of bar 3, we create even more dissonance when we have the cellos holding the F# while the violins play most of a G chord: The flat 9 interval that this creates is also disturbing. Also in bar 6, the basses hold a C note while the cellos start their melody, also on a C. On top of this, the violins play most of a G chord: Playing a G chord on top of a C bass note establishes a very open and unresolved sound. This is helped in part by the major 7th interval that is created when the violins play a B note on top of the C bass note. Let's listen to that sound: This constant interplay of unresolved harmonies keeps the music melancholy. |
