Let's listen to the sound of a Major chord:

Any time the notes C, E and G are played simultaneously, you hear a C Major chord. When the root note (in this case C) is the bottom note of your chord, you are playing the chord in root position.

However, you don't need to always stack the notes on top of each other in that same order. In other words, if you start with the note E, and then add the note G on top of that, and then the note C on top of that, you still have a C Major chord. You are just playing it in an inversion.
