Build Your Own

We just learned that any one augmented chord has the same notes as two other augmented chords. Why are these tonal relationships important? Because they allow you to move gracefully from one key to another.

Let's say you are in the key of F Major and you are alternating back and forth between the C Augmented chord and the F Major chord:

Instead of always returning to the F Major chord, we could use the C Augmented chord to pivot to an A Major chord, and then continue our music smoothly in the new key of A Major:

Why is that so? Because the C Augmented chord is also an E Augmented chord. E is the V chord in the key of A major and, therefore, wants resolve to the A Major chord.

Knowing all the uses of the Augmented chord, or any chord for that matter, will help you to navigate quickly, creatively and effortlessly as you compose your own music.
