Tempo Terminology
|
Tempo MarkingsTempo markings in a musical score indicate the tempo at which the music should be performed. Tempo markings are always indicated at the beginning of the composition: The composer indicates tempo changes in later portions of the composition by inserting additional tempo markings at the appropriate location(s) in the score. Traditional TerminologyIn "classical" music, tempo markings are often indicated with traditional Italian terms. (Note: We've listed the following tempo markings from slowest to fastest.) largo = very slow; broad lento = slow adagio = slow andante = moderately slow moderato = moderate or medium allegretto = fast allegro = fast (faster than allegretto) vivace or presto = very fast The precise tempo indicated by each of the above terms is subject to the interpretation and discretion of the conductor or of the performer(s). |
