Providing an Internal Motor

As an accompaniment to other instruments, the violas are often called upon to provide an "internal motor" of sorts:

Here, the violas' repetitive pattern creates energy beneath the atmospheric tones of the violins. A woodwind melody on top of this would be all that's needed to complete this musical moment.

Other times, the slightest movement from the violas is all that's needed to create motion:

As before, a woodwind - or brass - melody would contribute greatly to this moment.
