Whole Tone Scales

A Whole Tone scale consists of six different notes ascending or descending from the root in whole steps. There are no half steps in a Whole Tone scale. No matter where you start in the sequence of six notes, the notes remain the same. Therefore, there are really only two whole tone scales:

C Whole Tone scale:

Db Whole Tone scale:

A Whole Tone scale starting on either D, E, F#, G# or A# will have the exact same notes as the C Whole Tone scale. Likewise, a Whole Tone scale starting on either Eb, F, G, A or B will have the exact same notes as the Db Whole Tone scale.

Note: The only basic chords that can be made from the whole tone scale are augmented chords. Therefore, the Whole Tone scale and augmented chords are closely linked.
