A very simple approach to expressing nature in music involves having solo woodwinds play delicate melodies over soft string chords. This is just what we've done here. Since this example runs barely more than 5 bars, we only need one chord. For the duration of the music, the violins play the root and 3rd of an F major chord.

This gentle bed of sound acts as a glue between the interplay of woodwind melodies.

Since we are in the key of F major, we use the F Pentatonic scale to create our clarinet and flute melodies:

The Pentatonic scale is commonly used when trying to depict nature in music. In bars 1 and 2, the clarinet and flute use four of the notes from this unique five-note scale.

Notice how the woodwind melody uses 16th and 8th notes along with longer held notes. This helps mimic the playful quality of nature.
