Magical Moment Musical Example

The chord most commonly associated with magic is the augmented chord. The simple raising of the note D to D# turns a mundane G major chord into a magical G augmented chord: This half-step relation adds a magical sound to our Magical Moment musical example. |

Here, the flute mostly plays an arpeggiated G major chord. But by adding the note D# (enharmonic Eb) next to every D natural, we create the illusion of a shimmering G augmented chord. The fact that the notes go by so quickly also adds to the magical feeling. The celesta merely copies beats 1 and 3 of the flute part, while the harp plays most of the flute notes on beats 2 and 4. The D# is scored as an enharmonic Eb throughout our Magical Moment musical example. |
