In our discussion of the Dominant 7th chord, we mention that there are two types of 7th chords that naturally occur in any Major scale. The first type is the Dominant 7th chord. The second type is called the Major 7th chord. Let's listen to a Major 7th chord:

A Major 7th chord consists of a Major 3rd, a minor 3rd and another Major 3rd:

The reference for a Major 7th chord is either "Maj.7", "M7" or, in pop or jazz charts, "7".  So, either "C Maj.7", "CM7" or "C7" denotes a C Major 7th chord.
