Exercise #1 - Create a melody over a chord progression.

Step 1 - Choose a Chord Progression.

In the key of C major, choose the I-vi-ii-V progression. Place the chord progression in the left hand.

Repeat this chord progression so that the music lasts four to eight bars. Hold each chord for the same duration. The chords can either be quarter notes, half notes or whole notes.

Step 2 - Create a Melody.

Add a melody over the I-vi-ii-V progression. Place the melody in the right hand.

Exercise #2 - Create another melody over a different chord progression.

Step 1 - Choose a Different Chord Progression.

In the key of C Major, choose the I-I7-IV-iv progression. Place the chord progression in the left hand.

Repeat this chord progression so that the music lasts four to eight bars. Hold each chord for the same duration. The chords can either be quarter notes, half notes or whole notes.

Step 2 - Create a Melody.

Add a melody on top of that, in the right hand.
