Introduction

When you desire to compose something a little out of the ordinary, the Diminished scale might provide the sound you are looking for. Like the Whole Tone scale, it has a very unique quality. But as you will soon learn, the Diminished scale is a bit more versatile.  

For this chapter, we will work with the form of the Diminished scale that rises a half step between its first two notes. Let's listen to the C diminished scale:
